Abstract in Boulder

Taken in Boulder, CO one evening during my DR trip in February. Dave, Ali, and myself were driving into the city for dinner at "Med" (Mediterranean Restaurant). Dinner was excellent, as were the martinis and dessert. And I also managed to take this cool picture!

Urban Reflection

This was taken off Morgan Street across the street from my apartment building after the rain one day last year. The clouds were finally breaking up and the sun was trying to shine before it set. It was a bit chilly that evening so I decided to give it a "cool" feeling by increasing the blue hues.

Early Morning Cardinal

I woke up early the other Sunday morning and headed over to Duke Gardens for a little photo venture. It had rained earlier that morning and there was still a slight overcast. This shot was taken under some trees. The bird was watching a couple of children feed the ducks and geese. Applied the Posterize filter for the effect.

Mountain View Outside of Estes Park, CO

This is one of my favorite photos I've taken. I think it's because it reminds me of the paintings from Hudson Valley during the early 1800s, by artists such as Thomas Cole. The drive on Hwy 72 to Estes Park from Eldora was amazing. Some of the views are breathtaking and because of this I'm definitely planning on going back for a leisure trip.

Went out to Boulder, CO in mid March for business, but managed to sneak a day for adventure. Took Hwy 72 from Eldora up to Estes Park and took this shot inside this Old Fashioned Candy Shop in the quaint little town. I didn't head up into Rocky Mountain National Park because of the snow, but next time I definitely will because I'm going back!

Blue Crystal

This is another medhi plugin photo I played around with tonight. This photo is of a color changing crystal in the aquarium. I used the Kaleidoscope plugin for this groovy look. The colors were only set at Auto Levels and are pretty right on the mark on how it looked.

I'll try to get some more photos posted when my schedule slows down.

This isn't my "usual" type of post, but todayI was thinking about how happy and proud to be an aunt I am. So I thought I'd put up a picture of my nieces. The first picture is of my first niece. Isn't she such a cutie?! This picture was taken at my parent's house for Christmas Dinner. It was a wonderful and fun evening. The next picture posted is of my second niece, another cutie, if I say so myself. :-)

Crazy Yellow Kaleidoscope

Retired Lights

Around the corner from my apartment complex resides an old "retired" railroad crossing light and tracks. I took this photo in July 2005 and had a very washed out background. After toning that down a bit I used the Poster Edges filter, which I love so much.

The Lion Stare

Another NC Zoo photo taken in the beginning of December. It was quite chilly out that day and some of the animals had been taken inside as a precaution. The lions were out and pacing back and forth as though wanting to be let inside themselves! This lion stopped long enough for me to get a good shot. As for editing, I've used the Brush Stroke for Accentuated Edges giving it a "painted" look.

What's Up, Duck?

But these two ducks were the most colorful out there and seemed to be waiting for me to take their picture. So that's what I did...

Thought I'd post something to brighten up the page a bit. This was taken around the block from my apartment this summer. I really enjoy using the Poster Edges filter, especially with more colorful shots. No other edits were made except for the filter and resizing the image.

Sea Lions - Part II

I hoped that I had gotten a good photo of the sea lions swimming underwater. But the reflection was hard to block. I ended up getting my lens as close as possible to the glass and wished for the best. One thing I did like was capturing the rays of light shining down into the water.

Got A New Camera

It's been a while since I've posted a picture due to a very hectic schedule. And it's been a while since I've been able to go out and take pictures too! But I did happen to bring my new little camera I got for Christmas, a Kodak Easyshare V530, out with me one brisk winter afternoon. This picture is taken in the courtyard to my apartment complex in Durham. I really liked how blue the sky is reflected in the photo. Hope everyone had a Happy Holiday and have a Happy New Year!!!

Sealions - Part I

This is the outside view of the sealions and the harbor seals holding tank at the NC Zoo. I didn't really get a good picture of the sealions swimming around in this shot, but loved the crisp, cool colors.

Lunch Time

Went to the NC Zoo in Asheboro this past Friday and took tons of pictures. It was starting to get cold, so some of the animals were brought inside to protect them from the cold air. But there were alot of the other animals out and about on this chilly day. I'll be posting quite a bit of pictures from here for the next week or two. Hope you like!!!

Poster Daisy

Taken near Downtown Durham earlier this summer. Decided to take a walk one evening in my neighborhood and came across this gerber daisy in one of the flower gardens at Measurement Incorporated. I went to move a leaf to take this picture and disturbed a bunch of hidden ants. They were crawling all over the flower, but I decided to take the picture anyway. After a little editing in Photoshop, I was able to make the flower look bug-free. This is one of my earlier "posterized" images.

Alien Cellular

Since I haven't really been posting a photo every single day, I figured I'd post two today to try and catch up. This image was taken in my kitchen one night for a "Bubbles" challenge at DPChallenge.com. As for how I created the bubbles, I used some Palmolive and some water and disturbed the water enough to create a small layer of bubbles. The bowl is dark cobalt, so the background came out nice, dark and blue. I set my camera at Super Macro and started taking pictures. After some post processing, I ended up with Alien Cellular.

Durham Fire Engine

Every year in September Durham holds the Annual Pride Festival for North Carolina. Last year I was able to sit down on the street level to watch the parade. The City of Durham always has one of it's firetrucks drive down Main Street in front of Duke University as part of the procession. I really liked the bold red colors captured in this photo and decided to play around with it in Photoshop and gave it a posterized effect.

This photo was taken in July, 2005 around the corner from my apartment. Measurement Incorporated is located across the street from the old Durham Bulls Athletic Park. They keep an assortment of flowers and plants in bloom around their buildings. I took this photo while taking a walk in the neighborhood one evening after work.

Durham's Two Towers

These two Lucky Strike towers are located in Downtown Durham, near the Durham Bull's Ball Park. Recently, they have completed construction of several shops and restaurants that surround the towers and form a nice courtyard for socializing before and after a Bull's game. This photo was taken across the street from the towers. The sky had a weird blanket-like look to it when this photo was taken on last Friday evening.

Watercolor

The Great Blue Heron of Sarah P. Duke Gardens. This heron was not people shy and came quite close to myself and others as several geese were being fed bread by some children. On a couple of occasions, the heron sqawked loudly and struck out at some geese when they got to close. So, needless to say, when the heron started walking toward me I became a bit weary. It was about 3 feet away from me when it struck down into the water and came up with a small catfish. It was a pretty amazing thing to see.! This image is one of several that I took on Saturday morning. I decided to represent this photo as a watercolor. Hope you like!

Full Moon in September

Went outside with the camera and tripod and captured a few moon photos. This was with my DiMAGE Z5, almost zoomed to the max. I hope to take a few photos of the moon when I get my 2x Telephoto lens, which will hopefully be delivered sometime soon this week.

Perspective Possibility

It probably would have done better that my current one, but I didn't think it was strong enough for the Perspective challenge on http://www.dpchallenge.com. Oh well, I like it! As for what it is...it's an old alarm on my apartment building. (I live in an old, renovated tobacco warehouse in Downtown Durham)

15 Cent Diner

One of my better photos from when I first started getting into photography. This particular one was very popular with the people who attended our (Jen and myself) photo exhibit. Sold a few prints of this. I have actually worked on it a bit, I've learned alot since the time I first printed this image. As for where it is located, it sits in a courtyard by the Durham Bulls Ballpark in Durham, NC.

Doggy Portrait

Portrait of Camir, my chocolate labrador retriever. I did a lot of post editing to this. Cropped out the background and rendered clouds. Smudged the outside of the fur against the background to blend. Duplicated the layer and adjusted the brightness of the background. Put image through a filter by Virtual Photographer, B&W/Flashback. And Voila...my own Puppy Portrait!

Buttermilk Falls in Peekamoose, NY Dec '04

Last December, we drove up to Highland Lake, NY for Christmas. On one of our free days, we decided to drive up to a friend's house and went through Peekamoose, NY. We stopped at one of the falls on the "narrow, windy" road to see the ice accumulating near the edge of the falls itself and around the water's edge as it flowed down the mountain. This photo was taken with an older digital camera and was edited using Photoshop Elements 2.

Flower's Spotlight

On one of our walks with the dog, we walked by a bunch of yellow flowers by the sidewalk. With a little bit of Photoshop editing, I was able to give the flower the spotlight it deserved. Hope you like it!

Light Side of the Moon

Yesterday on my way out of the store, I saw the moon shining brightly against the darkening blue sky. Luckily, I had my camera and decided to test out the zoom capabilities of it. The moon was set kind of high in the sky, and the sun was setting beautifully not far to the right of it. I was surprised to see that the moon came in as clear as it did, and that the surrounding areas were black, and not blue.

I did do a bit of editing to the photo by enhancing the color levels, and applying a filter through the Virtual Photographer plug-in on Photoshop Elements.

Purple Flowers

Saturday, Jen and I walked up to the Bimbe Festival that was going on at Durham Central Park. Along our walk, the festival was only a few blocks away, we came across flowers planted here and there. In front of our apartment was a flower bed full of purple and yellow flowers....and bees. I was able to catch this one doing it's thing.

The Moving Truck

After the rain on Friday night, I got up in my window and looked out at the intersection up the street. The lights were reflecting off the water on the ground, which helped brighten up the photo and add some colors. I was lucky enough to catch a moving truck drive by on Duke Street and took this photo at the perfect time.

Was going to use it for my DPChallenge submission for Motion, but was a bit late. Still love the photo though!

Solar Cactus

Yesterday I took a few pictures out my window again, and the first one I took was of my cactus in the windowsill. Forgetting that my shutter was set to stay open a bit longer than it should have been, the lighting was overpowering. So, I decided to tinker with Photoshop a bit and make an over exposed picture somewhat viewable.

Fly By Car

Last night I was taking some pictures from my apartment window. I waited and waited for that one vehicle that passed by on the street. After standing there for about 20 minutes or so, I believe about 4 cars had passed by. Out of those four, I was able to catch a bit of 2 of them. It was fun, and I learned more about my camera during that wait for the perfect shot. Next time, I think I'll start a bit earlier than 10:30 to start taking pictures.
